WHAT IS SCITECH STUCO, AND WHAT DO WE DO?

What is Student Council?

Student Council is a student-run organization within schools around the world. It consists of a select number of students from the student body who join together and represent their school as one.

The Student Council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with faculty members and school administrators. It also helps raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects, school renovation, etc., and deals with many school related activites or issues.

What are the benefits of joining Student Council?

Becoming a member of the council is a great privilege. By joining the Council, you represent your fellow students and hold responsibility for the connection between the student body and faculty members. You will demonstrate school pride, leadership potential, service to not only classmates but also your community, and involvement with campus administration. Living up to these expectations by your peers as well as staff will prove a great duty.

How do I join Student Council?

The Student Council consists of 6 elected representatives from each grade for a total of 24 representatives. In order to run, you must complete a nomination form and write a paragraph explaining why you wish to run for Student Council. To achieve a spot, you must win votes from your peers.

The nomination form focuses on demonstrating you have:

Hard work.

Diligence and dedication must appear in all of your courses. You must be passing all of your classes in order to run for Student Council.
Friendly character.

In order to show friendly character, you must obtain twenty-five signatures from the peers among your class showing their support for you. Being able to connect with the student body is a key attribute that Student Council members possess.
Staff approval.

You must show that faculty support your candidacy by obtaining four signatures from your teachers and one from an administrator.

During the year, an announcement will be made where and when to pick up a form to sign up for candidacy. This announcement is not scheduled, so students who wish to apply must be alert and attentive to upcoming reminders and morning announcements. Freshman elections are normally held in late September while sophomore, junior, and senior elections are normally held in mid-April. There will be a deadline for turning in the form to compete.

But wait. What does the SciTech Student Council do during the year?

Every school's Student Council is both alike and different in many ways. We, the Science Academy StuCo, hold entertaining events for the school, fundraise for good causes, and most importantly, listen to what YOU want.

Events.
Every month or so, the student council will, either by itself or with other clubs, host fun events. These consist of dances, game nights, performances, fundraisers, blood drives, etc. Many of these events are SciTech traditions. You can't miss them!

Projects.

Every semester, the student council will take on at least two school improvement projects. These range from installing purified water dispensers to planting trees and other vegetation around campus, based on what the student body wants.

Public Relations.
During the year, you will hear suggestions from your peers and staff. They can give feedback on the details of an event, new renovations going on in the school, or any aspect of StuCo. These suggestions will be discussed amongst the council and with school faculty to determine whether or not they are feasible. Faculty members as well have the authority to entrust you with requests and tasks to complete.

How do meetings work within Student Council?
Student Council holds meetings regularly to plan events and keep things running as necessary. Meetings are held during lunch at least once a month or as frequently as once a week. Meetings will always be announced beforehand. For details on what was discussed during a meeting, please visit the Meetings tab above.
